Tonight I went Tataki - a place I thought at first was going to be more novelty than quality. But I was pleasantly surprised.

In short, their mission statement is to serve species of seafood that are harvested in a sustainable manner.

Knowing that, I was a little skeptical. No Toro, not Hamachi, and no Hirame. I was like “crap, those are my staples. I am not eating just California rolls and tamago.”  But like it said, I was pleasantly surprised.

Tonight’s meal:

• Tataki Deluxe: 5 types of Tataki of the chef’s choice served with 5 dipping sauces (Salmon, Scallop, Amber Jack Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, and Kampachi)
• Beef Carpaccio,
• 3 kinds of Nigiri: Tonight’s special mackerel (I can’t remember the name, but it was so light and buttery with just a hint of the ocean at end), Saba (regular mackerel), and Uni.

Everything was super fresh. The subtle sweet, salty, and buttery tones of each cut of fish was testament to the quality.  Because this place didn’t have my standard choices, it gave me the opportunity to try some great stuff I would have never thought of trying elsewhere. This was another of those moments when change was good. It won’t replace Ebisu or Kabuto, but it’ll be a new place to add into the rotation.

In addition to being a great meal, I walked away feeling good about not eating a species into extinction…for tonight at least.

I notice they’re wearing the Lego Jewelry by Dee and Ricky, made popular by Kanye (and will probably be killed by Marc Jacob).

I’d like propose the use of “drag me to hell” (DMTH) in our everyday conversations. I’m not saying we should replace FML. Think of it like this: DMTH is to FML as LMAO is to LOL. This variation in degrees helps us to better communicate how we’re really feeling.

previously i’ve written about fat mentality. basically when people can see they have a problem, know the solution, but just don’t take the steps toward the solution. like fat people who need to eat right and exercise. it’s right in front of their faces. in that same entry i also noted that fat mentality can be much more difficult to deal with considering it’s not visible.

i’ve been living life and just thinking about situations since then and have discovered a kind of diversion, but not solution, to fat mentality.  sometimes when people are physically fat they go on binge diets, or become anorexic, or partake in some other drastic effort to lose weight. people also go on mental binge diets in hopes of a quick fix (i’ll call it that for the sake of maintaining a theme).

this is the scenario where the mentally fat person finally says, “ok. this is bullshit. i’m fat and i need to get unfat and i need to stop eating so much”. but some times they take it too far and just stop eating (partaking in that activity) all together. and no matter how much they don’t eat, they still think it’s not enough. the whole thing stemmed out of good intention but just went overboard until they can’t take it anymore due to lack of understanding safe paths to rehabilitation.

people just do all these other things to supplement eating. smoke. consume things that have no nutritional value, eat just celery and drink water to fill up, sleep, do drugs, just do random shit to occupy their minds until they’re not hungry.

when someone is coming out of a space where they were in an unhealthy state of mind and they want to change, they often go about trying to fix themselves without really knowing how.  most often they just detach themselves from the problem.  they don’t really get over it, they get as far away from it as possible. this leads to relapse.

For example – a girl is in an abusive relationship. her fat mentality had kept her bound to it for several years. one day she realizes she needs to end the relationship, so she does. (i know it’s over simplified). the important thing to note is that she left the relationship, but didn’t get over the habit. She could go several years thinking she’s better off, thinking she’s healthy, but being human and a creature of habit, there’s a good chance she’ll find herself in the same situation again. she could meet another abusive guy and be right back in the same situation.

the real task for a person suffering from fat mentality is not to just run from or get over their problem, but to identify it, understand it, confront it, and break it. In a sense go through it.  that way there’s no turning back to it.

at this point of my entry i don’t really have a solution. it’s just something i’ve observed and experienced personally. i just needed to write it out.

hopefully i’ll be able to think of something more tangeble on the subject rather than just ramble on and on.

Anyhow, after watching all of the debates I never felt like any of the communities that I’m a part of had been addressed. There were Joe Six Packs, Soccer Moms, and the ever so famous Joe the Plumber. Oh, and the Black and White people.  That’s when Kelly’s piece, “Black, White, Whatever”, turned the light on in my head and shouted what was on the tip of my brain. Obviously she says it with much more style.  Though it’s been posted for a month now, I’m still glad I saw it later rather than never and would now like to share it with you. Enjoy.

“Black, White, Whatever”

Just got back from a mission trip to Vegas, tasked to do Vegas right. And I did, short of doing anything that I’d regret.

I’ve been to Vegas at least 10 times, but never to party, just with the fam. Needless to say, this time couldn’t be more different. Too many details to drop, but below is a recap of the first night.

Friday night:

· Leave SF: 8:15pm

o Let’s go let’s go!

· Land at LV airport: 10pm

o We’re here we’re here!

· Get to the Venetian and check in bags: 10:35pm

o Gotta hurry gotta hurry!

· Throw on new kicks and a vest in the lobby: 10:36pm

o I can’t believe I’m doing this

· Meet the crew in front of Tao: 10:40pm

o Let the games begin

· Get into Tao with bottle service at Tao Beach: 10:45pm

o A scene from Entourage – you get what you pay for (the pic doesn’t do it justice)

· Party hearty: All night long

o Need I say more?

· Wrap it up and crash at the Wynn: Some point in the morning

o Lost my phone in a cab and got it back – whew

That was just the first night.

Other general details: Stayed at the Wynn and Mandalay Bay, clocked in over 12 hours of pool/beach time, talked about politics-girls-business-fashion-media-andhowmuchweneverwantedtoleave, , averaged 1 alcoholic beverage every waking hour, went to 3 clubs over 3 nights, used Mix at Mandalay’s bathroom and had a view of the entire LV strip, was violated by a bachelorette party, found money in pants put there by mentioned bachelorette party, observe pickup artists in action (bizarre), never missed home.

All I know is that I want to go back. It’s not the ladies. It’s not the drinks. It’s not the gambling. There’s just something about the air. Yeah I know it’s fake. But if you don’t take yourself too seriously, let inhibitions go just a little, don’t think about the fat load money you budgeted for the sake of blowing, you can really get comfortable in the city of indulgence.
